FAQs
To calculate your carbon footprint we use a model developed by UC Berkeley's CoolClimate Network. This model estimates your footprint by asking you questions about your lifestyle, diet, travel habits and energy use. So, your carbon offsets are personalized to your lifestyle. We plan to refine our estimated calculations over time as more users join Neutral.
Before launching Neutral we talked with a lot of people like you. Based on this feedback we curated our programs to match our users’ goals and to offer access to projects from around the world across different offset project categories.
At Neutral we have strict standards in choosing our projects—we only purchase voluntary, high impact projects that are 100% verified and have the documentation to prove it. So you can be sure the dollars you invest are doing the most good possible.
Once you subscribe, Neutral will procure offsets on your behalf to neutralize the carbon footprint we calculated during the enrollment process. Each user has a different footprint, and Neutral purchases offsets to match your individual emissions on an ongoing basis.
To make a change to your subscription, please cancel your current subscription and answer the calculator questions with your new information. Then select the offset project of your choice!
Both our National and Global projects groups offer a diverse collection of forest management, emissions capture and renewable energy development projects. Whether you choose to support carbon offset actions at home or around the world is entirely your choice.
At Neutral we believe that we all must take ownership of our personal emissions footprint, which is why we ensure your monthly subscription is sized to fit your lifestyle. By using our carbon calculator you will have a customized subscription amount that is tied directly to your individual emissions. We purchase offsets that provide bang for your buck, allowing Neutral subscribers to offset their footprint while keeping their subscription price low. That said, the average monthly subscription will be between $15-$25 per month, depending on footprint size and projects you want to invest in.
Unlike some offset subscription services, we only purchase 100% verified offsets. That means our offset projects have been evaluated and measured by a third-party organization that specializes in carbon offset verification. We work with the industry leaders in the verification space, including Verra, Climate Action Reserve, and the American Carbon Registry.
Over the course of each project’s life, offset credits purchased through Neutral are issued one time only and then retired—never resold.
Not at the moment, but this is something we are considering for the future.
Carbon offsets come in a variety of forms to allow voluntary market participants, like Neutral, to invest in projects that match the objectives of the organization purchasing offsets. At Neutral, we wanted to offer our members the opportunity to invest in offsets across a variety of project types, such as forestry, industrial emissions, and renewable energy. At Neutral, we purchase offsets that are from projects that are high-impact and verified. You may be asking, what does that mean?
Offset projects offered have been verified by an independent third-party: All projects that we invest in have been certified by independent third-party organizations that validate the claims of the offset project. Specifically, Neutral offers offsets from projects that have been verified by Verra and the Climate Action Reserve.
Offset projects offer different levels of impact: As mentioned above, Neutral offers a variety of projects for members across forestry, industrial emissions, and renewable energy projects. Although industrial emission capture projects are not as picturesque as a beautiful forest, they provide a great return on investment in climate protection terms since they capture greenhouse gasses before they are emitted into the atmosphere. At Neutral we invest in projects that provide high value from an environmental perspective.
